Process

As a digital artist, I use Procreate to create my digital pieces using a iPad and iPencil. I often start by adding a reference image into procreate and sketching on a 2653 x 3000 canvas with 300 resolution. I then sketch from the reference images often found on Pinterest, a lot of changes happen during the sketching phase, I often lasso stuff and make my sketch bigger or smaller. This is the part of the process where I'm trying to find a sketch that I'm happy with. I also use the liquidfy tool to change small details in my sketch, and push around things that I'm not happy with.

Once I have created a sketch that Im satisfied with, I then colour inside my sketch on a new layer to set a base for where I want stuff to go.

After I have put a base down on a new layer, I then start blocking out tones on new layers and clipping them to my grey base this helps me keep the same shape as before. This is kept to a layer underneath the sketch, I lower the opacity of the sketch and begin to paint the face.

When I paint the face, I look at the shadows and try to keep some shadows soft and some hard, this gives a nice contrast between shadows. When I paint the eyes I always add a harsh shadow on top of the eye, this is a style choice I prefer.

At this point in my process I have decided weather I want to continue working on the piece, If I decide that I like it I begin to render things better and add more detail.

When painting the clothes I often use the lasso tools to create the harsh shapes, I duplicate this and use it under the darker shapes, I turn down the tones and blend out to create a fade though the shadows.

For the details in the clothes, I draw on a new layer and try to replicate the same pattern that is on the clothes.

For most of my work I use a hard round brush and I also blend with the same brush.

Once I'm happy with everything I go to adjustments in procreate and increase sharpening to 100%. This is something I do as a style choice as well as making my drawing look more defined.

increasing the sharpening makes everything look more sharp and detailed. It helps add texture without using a texture brush.
